If you have a few minutes spare today, Friday 23 October, manekineco games has a small free thing for you. a wonderful cat life Episode.Rodin is a short browser game about Rodin, the black stray from the studio's upcoming open world cat game, back when he was a kitten. It went up on itch.io and UnityRoom on 22 October and is only meant to be up for two days, so today is the last day.

The studio pitches it as a single mission. You run around the same Showa-era backstreets as the main game, get into a bit of mischief and play. The press release puts it at about three minutes, the itch.io page says three to five, and you can play straight in the browser without making an account.

Who Rodin is

In a wonderful cat life you play Kedama, a kitten who has got lost in an old Japanese downtown and has to learn stray life: climbing walls, jumping from roof to roof and cutting through alleys. Rodin is the older cat a step or two ahead of Kedama, and the main game never shows his past. This episode does. The studio's own description of it is "a short special edition" that shows the world from a different angle.

It also works as a taster. The screenshots show the main game's look: blocky streets lined with vending machines and telegraph poles, wide blue skies, and cartoon cats on top. The full game also has the Japanese comedian Yutty playing himself, with a mission built around him.

Where to play it

Episode.Rodin is free on itch.io and UnityRoom. The studio says it has not decided whether the episode stays up after 23 October, so if you want to meet Rodin, go today. The main game is on Steam to wishlist. We previewed it here last month.
