Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Returning to its Roots?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is performing well with critics, averaging out at an 86 so far on Metacritic.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been hyped for a while, and since its release on 23 October 2026, the hype has only grown. After two back-to-back weekends of beta testing, the developers received a lot of community feedback.

Activision has not yet publicly commented on the opening weekend numbers or how they compare to previous Call of Duty games. However, MW4 has received a very positive reception from the general public so far.

In fact, Modern Warfare 4 is the highest-rated Call of Duty game in the past decade. Critic reviews have averaged 85, 87, and 86 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, respectively. Xbox currently has too few critic reviews on Metacritic, so its score is still to be determined.

Even with these great reviews, though, the player base has dipped significantly compared with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on Xbox Series X|S. It had 32% fewer players than BO7's opening weekend; however, MW4 wasn't on Xbox Game Pass like Black Ops 7.

Nevertheless, Modern Warfare 4 is pleasing the players who have played it so far. We'll keep you updated on important updates on the game.
